Juicing 101

I have been juicing for over a decade now! I discovered juicing when Doctor Oz visited Kris Carr from Crazy, Sexy, Cancer in her home, I believe in 2009, and she made him her secret “Green Juice” which ever since she was diagnosed with cancer, replaced her martinis and mimosas in the mornings.

I was hooked immediately. Mind you I didn’t drink alcohol nor did I have cancer, but I loved the idea that she healed her cancer and changed her life with food. It spoke to me deeply and I knew I needed to jump on the train (although there was no train at the time) … and begin my juicing journey. I wish I could remember which one I bought, but I went out and purchased a juicer that very day and that is how I was inspired to begin juicing!

Between Green Juices and Green Smoothies, I have tried to incorporate one or the other into my diet on as many days as I possibly can.

I get asked all the time which juicers do I use and I have two go to’s. I have had one of them for about 5 years and the other 9 months. A juicer is an investment. They aren’t cheap BUT they last forever! I think of it as an investment in my health. If I were sick and needed medicine, I wouldn’t think twice about paying for it. This is my form of preventative medicine. I swear by it! Especially during cold and flu season. Boosting my body full of raw, dense nutrient rich juices truly does help if not ward off most all cases of cold and flu for my family and I. It has been an incredible tool to regulate my anxiety this past year. I use juice as my recovery after long workouts and I’ve found it to be a staple now in my Ironman Training. It helps me bounce back SO much faster. It helps my skin stay clear and glowing. I could go on and on and on…but I’ll just jump into my two juicers that I recommend now. And I bought these with my own money so these are just the two that I like!

Juicer 1

This is probably the one I use the most. It ranges in price around $229. The reasons I love this juicer are:

  1. I don’t have to chop anything. Like ANYTHING really unless my apples are huge. The chute is big so it cuts out a lot of prep time.

  2. It is FAST. I can make 32oz of juice in less than a minute.

  3. This juicer is perfect for my “non green” juices like carrots, oranges, beets, apples, ect. but I still use it for green juice when I am not prepped as much as I could be or short on time. This is my go to for all my softer fruits as well … like pear, oranges, guava, grapefruit, watermelon, ect.

  4. This is a GREAT first juicer. Easy clean up, fast and less oxidation than others on the market (which I will get to later).

  5. Pro Tip: Place a bag, like a grocery store bag to line the pulp catcher and your clean up will decrease in time even more!

Juicer 2

This juicer I splurged on this year as I really picked up my Green Juice and Celery Juice consumption. I have used it 3-4 times a week for about 9 months now. It is around $525. The reason the price jump is because this juicer is the top of line that you can have at home without being commercial. I proved to myself for over 17 years that I am committed to juicing so I went with this one. The thing that sets this juicer apart is that it is a Masticating Juicer which basically means 3 things:

  1. A masticating juicer is a fancy name for a cold press juicer. It has no sharp blades that rotate at high speeds (which can cause air to foliate with the juice (oxidation) and reduce its nutritional value). This particular juicer is proven to produce juices with higher concentrations of essential minerals like calcium, iron, zinc … up to 50%-200% higher from other name brand juicers.

  2. It provides minimal oxidation which means, the juice can stand up to 72 hours in the refrigerator with a minimal loss of nutritional value.

  3. Less Pulp and More Juice. This will yield higher quantities of juice than any other juicer out there. There is limited pulp and the pulp it does produce is DRY. Every last bit of juice is sucked out.

And the 3 reasons I love this particular juicer are:

  1. It literally sucks EVERY bit of juice out. I easily get a noticeable amount more of juice from this juicer.

  2. This juicer does require more prep time. The chute is smaller and fits only one or two celery stalks at a time. So everything must be chopped and ready. However, with less oxidation occurring, this juice will stay fresh in the fridge longer. I use this juicer when I know I will be busy and need to prep juices for a few days. Juice is best when you drink it immediately for the most nutrient absorption, BUT drinking day old juice is better than no juice and I feel confident when sealed, this juicer keeps the juice freshest and most nutrient dense.

  3. This is my FAVORITE juicer for Greens. I like my other one better for other juices that include softer fruit but for Green Juice this juicer literally is the BEST on the market. The first few times I used it I was in shock at how dry and how little pulp it produced and how much juice it could squeeze out of celery, kale, spinach and cucumbers!

So now that you know my two favorite juicers…I will share a few of my Favorite Juicing Recipes!

My Everyday Green Juice

  1. 1 stalk of celery (miracle vegetable for your liver, gut and detoxification)

  2. 1 bunch kale (high in protein, vitamins A,C,K and folate)

  3. 1 cucumber (super hydrating and incredible for your skin)

  4. 1 bunch cilantro (heavy metal detoxifier)

  5. 1 apple (mostly for flavor to sweeten it up but also high in phytonutrients and antioxidants that help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease)

  6. 1 large thumb of ginger (anti-inflammatory and high in antioxidants, good for gut)

  7. 1 large thumb of turmeric (anti-inflammatory and a miracle worker for sore muscles)

  8. 1 lemon and lime (for flavor and super high in vitamin C)

I drink this juice every single day that I can. This will make about 32oz of green juice. I swear by this juice! And here’s a little secret of mine … this juice has 23 grams of protein in it!

Celery Juice

  1. 1 stalk celery

That is it. Straight celery juice. Preferably on an empty stomach in the morning. This will yield about 16oz. For more information on the incredible healing properties of this juice head to the Medical Medium books and website. For my own personal experience on drinking celery juice… click HERE.

glowing skin juice

  1. 3 pounds carrots (high in beta carotene, an antioxidant that is converted to vitamin A inside the body and helps repair skin tissue and protects against the sun's harsh rays)

  2. 2 cucumbers (hydrating, hydrating, hydrating .. we use cucumber products on our skin all.the.time. so just think of this as beauty from the inside out)

  3. 1 thumb ginger (anti-inflammatory and can help with breakouts, eczema and rashes)

  4. 1 lemon OR 1 orange (vitamin C protects your skin from aging)

You will yield approximately 32oz from this juice. This has helped me with hormonal breakouts, after traveling stress, dryness from the winter and to balance oils in the summer. It is my GO TO for any and all skin problems.
